“It’s very majestic,” Ballard tells National Public Radio. “But over the years the Titanic has been damaged — by submarines that have visited the site, by the removal of artifacts and by natural erosion”.
The Expedition, a joint venture of the Mystic Aquarium, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other partners is streaming live MPEG-4 video over the Internet and Internet2 at www.ExploreTheSea.com, 24 hours a day from May 30 through June 9th.
As the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Hercules navigates the wreck of the Titanic, it will be encoded with a VBrick appliance and uplinked live via a satellite by EDS which has more details on the network. A VBrick appliance residing at Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration then simultaneously encodes the video into DVD-quality MPEG-2 video and the lower bandwidth MPEG-4 video suitable for the Internet.
